Ares lies on the ría that bears its name, in the north of the province of A Coruña, washed by the Atlantic Ocean. Its coast combines coves, urban beaches and more natural ones: Ares beach runs the whole length of the town's seafront promenade, and the beaches of Seselle and O Raso allow long walks along the shore with views across the ría. Ares is part of the Diputación de A Coruña's Ferrolterra destination, and the River Eume flows into its ría.
