About the coast in Murcia

By Equipe editorial GTM Labs · Updated

The coastline of the Region of Murcia, known as the Costa Cálida, runs for around 250 km along the Mediterranean, with cliffs, sandy beaches and small coves. It includes the Mar Menor, a shallow saltwater lagoon separated from the Mediterranean by La Manga, a strip of sand and dunes between Cabo de Palos and Veneziola beach. La Manga has beaches on both seas and is cut by natural channels, the golas, which carry Mediterranean water into the lagoon.

Beyond the lagoon come long beaches such as those of San Pedro del Pinatar, half-wild coves in Cartagena, the eroded rock formations of Mazarrón and fishing towns such as Águilas. Calblanque, Monte de las Cenizas and Peña del Águila Regional Park, between Cabo de Palos and Portmán, combines sandy areas, dunes, fossil dunes, coves and cliffs. West of Cartagena, past La Azohía point, the coast turns to cliffs as far as Cabo Tiñoso.

Getting to know the sea in Murcia

Wind

Winds here have names: levante (from the east) and poniente (from the west).

Each beach page uses these names when they blow, and they count in the verdict like any other wind. Each name links to its definition.

Tide

In the Mediterranean the tide varies by only a few centimetres, so we do not mark high or low tide.
