About the coast in Andalusia
By Equipe editorial GTM Labs · Updated
The Andalusian coastline opens onto the Atlantic Ocean along the Costa de la Luz, which takes in the beaches of Huelva and Cádiz, and onto the Mediterranean Sea from the Costa del Sol to the Costa de Almería. In Huelva, the Costa de la Luz runs from the mouth of the Guadiana, on the border with Portugal, to the mouth of the Guadalquivir, with long white-sand beaches, dunes and pine woods near Doñana National Park.
On the Mediterranean, the Costa del Sol covers more than 150 km of coastline in the province of Málaga, with beaches spread between the mountains and the sea. It is followed by the Costa Tropical, with cliffs, coves and long beaches, and the Costa de Almería, with desert areas, cliffs, rocky or dune-backed beaches and the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park.

Getting to know the sea in Andalusia
- Wind
Winds here have names: levante (from the east) and poniente (from the west).
In Málaga: terral (off the land), levante (from the east) and poniente (from the west).
In La Línea de la Concepción, the forecast gives the wind by its direction only.
Each beach page uses these names when they blow, and they count in the verdict like any other wind. Each name links to its definition.
- Tide
In the Mediterranean the tide varies by only a few centimetres, so we do not mark high or low tide.
In Cádiz, a tidal coast: each beach page marks the day's high and low tide, estimated by a model (not a tide-gauge measurement).
- Bathing water
Out of season: 22
