About the coast in the Basque Country

By Equipe editorial GTM Labs · Updated

The coast of the Basque Country looks out onto the Cantabrian Sea, where the mountains reach the sea as cliffs. Along the shore there are villages with fishing harbours, estuaries and marshes, and beaches both urban and wild.

The cliffs of Mutriku, Deba and Zumaia, in Gipuzkoa, hold layers of rock known as flysch and are part of the Basque Coast Geopark, a UNESCO Global Geopark. In Urdaibai, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the River Oka becomes a ría on reaching Mundaka and forms marshes teeming with life.
