About the coast in Catalonia

By Equipe editorial GTM Labs · Updated

The coast of Catalonia, on the Mediterranean, is divided between the Costa Brava, the Costa Barcelona, the Costa Daurada and the Ebro Delta. The Costa Brava runs from Portbou to Blanes, with coves between cliffs, golden-sand beaches and natural parks such as Cap de Creus, Aiguamolls de l'Empordà and Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter.

The Costa Barcelona combines long beaches, such as those of Calella, Santa Susanna and Castelldefels, with small coves such as the one at Garraf. The Costa Daurada, in the south of Catalonia, has golden-sand beaches. In the Ebro Delta, two sand spits gradually enclose the sea, with long sandy beaches and dunes.

Getting to know the sea in Catalonia

Wind

Winds here have names: tramontana (from the north), mestral (from the north-west), garbí (from the south-west) and levante (from the east).

Each beach page uses these names when they blow, and they count in the verdict like any other wind. Each name links to its definition.

Tide

In the Mediterranean the tide varies by only a few centimetres, so we do not mark high or low tide.

Bathing water

Out of season: 4

Latest analysis at each beach: 14/09/2026.

It is a periodic analysis, not today's water. The detail and the source are on each beach page.
