About the coast in Almería

By Equipe editorial GTM Labs · Updated

The province of Almería, in the south-east of the Peninsula, has around 200 km of Mediterranean coastline, from Pulpí in the east to Adra in the west. The Costa de Almería alternates between desert areas, others covered in greenhouses and mountainous stretches, with rocky beaches or beaches backed by dunes. To the west, before Aguadulce, the coast turns to cliffs; beyond it opens a flat stretch with wide beaches such as those of Roquetas de Mar, Guardias Viejas, Balerma and Balanegra.

Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park was the first protected land and marine area in Andalusia, and UNESCO recognises it as a Biosphere Reserve and Global Geopark. Volcanic rock predominates, with lava flows, domes and fossil beaches. Its seafront alternates steep cliffs with natural beaches such as Mónsul and Los Genoveses, secluded coves such as Carnaje and villages such as San José and Agua Amarga.

Getting to know the sea in Almería

Wind

Winds here have names: levante (from the east) and poniente (from the west).

Each beach page uses these names when they blow, and they count in the verdict like any other wind. Each name links to its definition.

Tide

In the Mediterranean the tide varies by only a few centimetres, so we do not mark high or low tide.

Bathing water

Out of season: 4

It is a periodic analysis, not today's water. The detail and the source are on each beach page.

Verdict for today only; each beach's page has the reasons and sources. It does not replace the instructions of the authorities at the beach.

Which beaches in Almería have a Blue Flag?

Playa de Levante Almerimar and Playa la Romanilla: Blue Flag 2026-2027, according to ADEAC. It is a seasonal award and says nothing about how the beach is today.
