Along the coast of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, in the south of Gran Canaria, lie the resorts of San Agustín, Playa del Inglés, Maspalomas and Meloneras, with seafront promenades. In the Maspalomas area, the shifting dunes, the palm grove and the Charca de Maspalomas lagoon form a Special Nature Reserve. The dune field, a mass of golden sand covering about 4 km², leads onto the Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas beach, at whose western end stands the Maspalomas lighthouse.
