About the coast in the province of Barcelona
By Equipe editorial GTM Labs · Updated
The province of Barcelona, in north-eastern Spain, has its coast on the Mediterranean Sea. The Costa Barcelona tourist area covers more than 100 km of that coastline, dotted with towns and seafaring villages. To the north, in the Maresme, there are large, long beaches such as those of Calella and Santa Susanna, and in Canet de Mar the beaches are flat and long.
To the south, fine golden-sand beaches such as those of Castelldefels alternate with the rugged Garraf coast and coves such as La Vinyeta. Between the sea and the mountains, natural areas such as the Llobregat Delta and the Garraf Park, the latter of limestone geology, are preserved.

Getting to know the sea in the province of Barcelona
- Wind
Winds here have names: tramontana (from the north), mestral (from the north-west), garbí (from the south-west) and levante (from the east).
Each beach page uses these names when they blow, and they count in the verdict like any other wind. Each name links to its definition.
- Tide
In the Mediterranean the tide varies by only a few centimetres, so we do not mark high or low tide.
